🥾 Hiking, nature & summits
Route des Crêtes
Built during the First World War for strategic reasons, the Route des Crêtes links the Vosges “ballons” over almost 80 km, from one pass to the next.
Getting there
By car or by bike, from the Col du Bonhomme to the Grand Ballon; some sections are closed in winter.
History
Opened by the French army so that troops could move out of sight of the enemy, it has become one of the most beautiful scenic roads in France.
Culture & stories
Panoramic views, fermes-auberges (farm inns), high mountain pastures and legendary passes (Schlucht, Bonhomme) line the route.
