Theme parks and family days out in the Grand Est
For a family day out, the Grand Est offers far more than a single big park: Nigloland in the Aube, the Parc du Petit Prince (Little Prince Park) near Mulhouse, the Sainte-Croix wildlife park in Moselle, the Volerie des Aigles (eagle aviary) and La Montagne des Singes (Monkey Mountain) at Kintzheim, the Parc Argonne Découverte in the Ardennes, not to mention swimming lakes, treetop adventure courses and more surprising places such as the Arzviller boat lift (Plan incliné). Worth knowing: Europa-Park, often associated with Alsace, is in Germany, on the other side of the Rhine.
The key to a successful trip is the calendar. Most outdoor parks open between late March and early April and close around 1 or 11 November; in winter, you need to turn to indoor attractions, Christmas events or the Vosges ski slopes when there is snow. Check minimum ages too: the Verdun Underground Citadel, for example, does not admit children under 8. This guide lists, month by month, the outings that are genuinely open.
What to do this month?
Pick a month: our seasonal ideas and a tip to make the most of it.
January: Most outdoor parks are closed. Go for Le Vaisseau in Strasbourg, open all year round, the Sainte-Croix wildlife park (open on certain days in January 2026) or the Vosges slopes if there is enough snow. The Verdun Underground Citadel generally closes for a few weeks in January.
February: Winter holidays: family sledging and skiing in the Vosges, snow permitting, and the Sainte-Croix park open every day in February 2026. The Verdun Underground Citadel reopens in early February (on 2 February in 2026).
March: The Kintzheim animal parks reopen: in 2026, Monkey Mountain on 21 March and the Volerie des Aigles on 25 March. The end of the ski season depends on snow cover.
April: The big parks’ season gets under way: in 2026, the Parc du Petit Prince opened on 3 April, Nigloland on the 4th and the boat lift on 1 April. The Easter holidays are often very busy.
May: May bank holidays fill the parks; aim for a weekday instead. The Parc de Wesserling reopens on 1 May (in 2026) with its ecomuseum trail designed for children.
June: A good time for treetop adventure courses, before the July crowds. At Wesserling, the Festival des Jardins Métissés began on 7 June in 2026.
Also in season: La Volerie des Aigles (Eagle Park)Lac d’Orient – Forêt d’OrientLac de MadineSaint-Louis–Arzviller Boat Lift (Inclined Plane)La Montagne des Singes (Monkey Mountain)Swimming & Sailing on Lake Gérardmer
July: Time for the lakes: beaches and water sports at Gérardmer, Madine or Lake Orient. The big parks open every day; arrive at opening time to keep queues down.
Also in season: La Volerie des Aigles (Eagle Park)Saint-Louis–Arzviller Boat Lift (Inclined Plane)Treetop Adventure at Parc Alsace AventureLa Montagne des Singes (Monkey Mountain)Parc de Wesserling – Gardens
August: In hot weather, opt for shady or cool outings: the forest at Monkey Mountain, treetop courses, or the galleries of the Verdun Citadel at 8°C.

September: Parks are quieter once the children are back at school. The deer rut brings the Sainte-Croix park to life in September, and Nigloland held a preview of Nigloween on 26 and 27 September 2026.
October: Halloween month: Nigloween at Nigloland, late-night openings at the Parc du Petit Prince (24 and 31 October in 2026). Last visits to the boat lift, open until 31 October.
November: End of the season: in 2026, Nigloland, the Volerie des Aigles and Monkey Mountain closed on 11 November. After that, fall back on Le Vaisseau or the Verdun Citadel (ages 8 and up).
December: Christmas atmosphere: the illuminated “Noël au Jardin” gardens at Wesserling from 4 to 30 December 2026, a winter trail at Sainte-Croix, and the Gérardmer ski area scheduled to open from 19 December 2026, snow permitting.

Our tips
- Buy your tickets online: several parks offer a lower price than at the ticket office, such as the Parc du Petit Prince in 2026.
- Check the day-by-day calendar: early and late in the season, some parks only open at weekends and during school holidays (zone B for Alsace and Lorraine).
- At the Verdun Underground Citadel, children under 8 are not admitted and it is around 8°C in the galleries: bring a jacket even in summer and book 48 hours ahead at busy times.
- At Monkey Mountain, the enclosure closes from 11:30 to 13:00 outside school holidays, weekends and public holidays: arrive early in the morning or early in the afternoon.
- For Halloween, plan ahead: at Nigloland, the “Nigloween” evenings with fireworks draw big crowds in late October and until 11 November.
- Combine neighbouring sites: the Volerie des Aigles and Monkey Mountain are about a kilometre apart at Kintzheim – a full day out just a stone’s throw from Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle.

Frequently asked questions
Is Europa-Park in the Grand Est?
No. Europa-Park is in Rust, Germany (Baden-Württemberg), on the other side of the Rhine. It is close to Alsace, but the major theme parks located in the Grand Est include Nigloland (Aube) and the Parc du Petit Prince (Haut-Rhin).
When does Nigloland open in 2027?
The 2027 dates had not yet been published at the end of October 2026. In 2026, the park opened on 4 April and closed on 11 November, with a Halloween season at the end. Check the park’s official calendar before booking.
What can families do in the Grand Est in winter?
Indoor attractions such as Le Vaisseau in Strasbourg are open all year round. The Sainte-Croix wildlife park also opens for part of the winter, and the Vosges offer sledging and skiing when the snow arrives. Always check opening days.
What is the minimum age to visit the Verdun Underground Citadel?
Children under 8 are not admitted, as the ride-on pod tour and augmented-reality headsets are not suitable for them. Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes for the visit, bring warm clothing (8°C in the galleries) and book ahead at busy times.
Information checked in October 2026. Opening hours, prices and conditions may change: check the official websites before you travel.
