🥾 Hiking, nature & summits

Grand Ballon

The highest point of the Vosges mountains at 1,424 metres, the Grand Ballon offers a 360° panorama over the Alsace plain, the Black Forest and, on clear days, the Alps.

Getting there

By car via the Route des Crêtes (D431), from Guebwiller or the Thann valley.

History

Long known as the “Ballon de Guebwiller”, it dominates the whole range. Its summit, served by the Route des Crêtes built during the First World War, bears the Diables Bleus (Blue Devils) monument, a tribute to the Chasseurs Alpins mountain troops.

Culture & stories

Located on the Route des Crêtes, it is ideal for hiking, paragliding and, in winter, skiing. The Diables Bleus monument stands nearby.
