🥾 Hiking, nature & summits
Hiking the Route des Crêtes
Panoramic trails along the Vosges summits, from high pastures to farm inns (fermes-auberges).
Overview
Built during the First World War to link French positions without passing through the valleys, the Route des Crêtes follows the watershed between Alsace and Lorraine. It serves the massif's great summits: the Grand Ballon, the Hohneck and the Col de la Schlucht. On foot, you soon leave it for paths across the chaumes – high mountain pastures with views stretching over the Alsace plain on one side and the forests and lakes of the Vosges on the other.
The GR 5 long-distance footpath runs alongside the route between the Hohneck and the Col du Bonhomme, switching between the Lorraine and Alsace sides. Along the way, fermes-auberges (farm inns) serve the repas marcaire, the traditional mountain farmers' meal, and Munster cheese – a stop that is part of ridge tradition. The climbs are manageable for a regular walker, but the summit climate, harsher than in the valleys, can catch you out even in midsummer. In winter, once the road is closed to cars, the ridges become a favourite terrain for snowshoeing and ski touring.
Where to do it
In Col de la Schlucht (Vosges (88)), in Lorraine. Best season: ☀️ Summer.
Good to know
77 km of ridges, from the Vieil-Armand to the Col du Bonhomme via the Grand Ballon, the Hohneck and the Schlucht, dotted with fermes-auberges (farm inns).
Tips
Check road conditions before you set off: the winter closure usually starts in mid-November and can be brought forward if snow comes early. Pack a windproof jacket and warm clothes, even in summer. Check that the ferme-auberge you're aiming for is open, as many only operate in season.

Frequently asked questions
When is the Route des Crêtes open to cars?
It closes every winter, usually from mid-November. In 2025 it closed on 17 November; in 2023 the closure was brought forward to 27 November because of early snow. It reopens in spring – on 17 April in 2025. The footpaths, however, remain accessible all year round.
Can you hike the Route des Crêtes in winter?
Yes. During the winter closure, the sections closed to vehicles are left for skiing and walking, which draws snowshoers and ski tourers. Conditions at altitude can be harsh: check the weather and snow cover, and bring suitable equipment.
Are the fermes-auberges (farm inns) open all year?
No. Many only operate in season, some from May to November, and close for part of the winter. Days and opening hours vary from farm to farm, so phone before you go, especially outside summer. Book if you're in a group to enjoy the repas marcaire.
What is the best hike from the Col de la Schlucht?
The GR 5 follows the ridges towards the Hohneck and the Col du Bonhomme, crossing from one side to the other. A climb up the Hohneck from the Schlucht offers one of the most open panoramas in the massif. Adjust the distance to your fitness and take a walking map.
Information checked in October 2026. Opening hours, prices and conditions may change: check the official website before you travel.
