🥾 Hiking, nature & summits

Hiking in the Grand Est: the Vosges, the Ardennes and the Argonne

The Grand Est is made for walking, far beyond the summits of the Vosges. In the mountains, the Club vosgien, founded in Saverne in 1872, uses volunteers to maintain nearly 20,000 km of waymarked trails, from the Grand Ballon to the Northern Vosges. The GR53 and then the GR5, marked with a red rectangle, cross the range from Wissembourg to the Ballon d'Alsace. Further north-west, the wooded ridges of the Meuse valley in the Ardennes, the twisted beech trees of the Montagne de Reims and the tufa waterfalls of Haute-Marne offer shorter and often quieter outings.

This is mid-mountain terrain: no glaciers, but changeable weather on the chaumes (high pastures), with wind, fog and sometimes snow as early as November. The main season runs roughly from May to October, when the fermes-auberges (farm inns) of the High Vosges welcome walkers and the Route des Crêtes is open. Autumn and winter are suited to forest walks and to the memorial sites of the First World War, as long as you bear in mind the hunting season and the short days. The pages below help you choose the right terrain at the right time.

Our tips

  • Buy or download the 1:25,000 map of the area: Club vosgien waymarking is designed to be read with a map, and only the circular routes can be followed without one.
  • On the chaumes, carry a windproof jacket and a warm layer even in summer: fog and wind can come down quickly on the ridge line.
  • In the quiet zones signposted by the Parc des Ballons (blue or red banners, from December to July), stay on the waymarked paths so as not to disturb the capercaillie and other wildlife.
  • From September to the end of February, check for organised hunts with the town hall or the local hunting association, wear bright colours and respect the “chasse en cours” (hunt in progress) signs.
  • Most fermes-auberges are seasonal and their opening days vary: phone ahead before planning your day's walk around a repas marcaire (traditional farm meal).
  • In winter, most of the Route des Crêtes is closed to traffic: check road access to your starting point on the websites of the Collectivité européenne d'Alsace or the Vosges Département.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to hike in the Vosges?

From May to October for the ridges, when the Route des Crêtes is open and the fermes-auberges welcome walkers. September often offers a good balance between weather and crowds. In winter, the high ground is snow-covered and better suited to snowshoeing.

What does the red rectangle on Vosges trails mean?

It marks the great traverse of the range, namely the GR53 (Northern Vosges, from Wissembourg) followed by the GR5, as far as the Ballon d'Alsace. This waymarking, specific to the Club vosgien, dates back to 1897; elsewhere in France, GR trails are marked in white and red.

Can you go hiking during the hunting season?

Yes, the trails remain open, but extra caution is needed from roughly September to the end of February, with dates varying by département. Check with the town hall or the local hunting association, wear bright colours and respect the “chasse en cours” (hunt in progress) signs put up for big-game hunts.

Where can I go hiking in the Grand Est outside Alsace?

The Lorraine side of the High Vosges (Hohneck, Lake Gérardmer and Lake Longemer), the Meuse valley in the Ardennes around Monthermé, the Montagne de Reims and its faux (twisted beeches), the Argonne and its First World War sites, or the Langres plateau and its tufa waterfalls in Haute-Marne.
