Vosges Mountains
Straddling Lorraine and Alsace, the Vosges Mountains unfold deep forests, round-topped “ballons”, glacial lakes and the famous Route des Crêtes.
Getting there
By car via the valleys (Gérardmer, Munster, Thann) and the Route des Crêtes; railway stations at Gérardmer, Saint-Dié, Remiremont and Colmar.
History
The Franco-German border from 1871 to 1918, the range bears the memory of the Great War. Today it lies at the heart of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park.
Culture & stories
Hiking (GR5), skiing in winter, fermes-auberges (farm inns) and marcaireries (traditional cheese-making farms), lakes and waterfalls: an outdoor playground all year round.
