Christmas markets, festivals and celebrations in the Grand Est

From late November to late December, the Grand Est lives to the rhythm of Advent. Strasbourg, whose Christmas Market carries on a tradition dating back to 1570, spreads its chalets across eight sites in the historic centre; Colmar has six, between the old town and La Petite Venise (Little Venice), and wine villages such as Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Eguisheim offer more intimate markets. In Lorraine, Nancy celebrates its patron saint for 45 days, from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, while Metz, Reims and Mulhouse, with its Christmas fabric renewed every year, also bring their centres to life.

The rest of the year is no less lively. In late July, the Alsace Wine Fair (Foire aux Vins d’Alsace), held in Colmar since 1948, combines tastings and concerts; on the first Sunday of September, Ribeauvillé pays tribute to its minstrels at the Pfifferdaj; in late August, Metz celebrates the mirabelle plum. Every two years, Charleville-Mézières hosts the World Puppet Theatre Festival, founded in 1961, whose next edition is announced for 17 to 26 September 2027. The Mondial Air Ballons at Chambley, on the other hand, is on hold. Here is how to choose your dates and avoid the crush.

Our tips

  • Book your accommodation several months ahead for December weekends in Strasbourg and Colmar, or stay in a nearby town with good rail links.
  • Choose weekdays and daytime: crowds peak on Saturdays and in the evenings. For Colmar and the surrounding area, consult the forecast crowd calendar published on noel-colmar.com.
  • Leave the car behind: park-and-ride car parks, Christmas shuttles and trains serve the Alsace markets, and the centre of Nancy is closed to traffic on the day of the great St Nicholas parade.
  • Check the opening days of the smaller markets: in 2026, Kaysersberg’s only opens from Friday to Sunday (27 November–20 December) and Ribeauvillé’s medieval market only on 5-6 and 12-13 December.
  • Dress in layers and wear waterproof shoes: you stay on your feet outdoors for a long time, and December evenings are cold and often damp.
  • In the crowds, keep a small, closed bag in front of you and agree on a meeting point if you are in a group or with children.
