Joinville

On the banks of the Marne, Joinville boasts the Château du Grand Jardin, an elegant Renaissance residence built in 1546 by Claude de Lorraine and surrounded by outstanding gardens.

Getting there

By car: D960/D67 along the Marne, north of Chaumont.

History

Cradle of the House of Guise, the town was once dominated by a fortified castle that has since disappeared; the Grand Jardin served as its pleasure residence.

Culture & stories

The château, its listed gardens and the Auditoire (the former courthouse) make up the visit, with concerts and a festival in summer.
