Metz Cathedral (Saint-Étienne)
Nicknamed the “Good Lord's Lantern”, Metz's Saint-Étienne Cathedral has one of the largest expanses of stained glass in Europe — nearly 6,500 m² — from the Middle Ages to Marc Chagall.
Getting there
By train: Metz station (TGV from Paris in about 1 hr 25), a 15-minute walk away. Pedestrianised city centre with easy access.
History
Built from the 13th to the 16th century, it has one of the highest Gothic naves in France, rising more than 41 metres to the vault.
Culture & stories
Its windows are the work of Hermann von Münster and Valentin Bousch, then, in the 20th century, Marc Chagall and Jacques Villon — a true museum of stained glass.
