Place Stanislas, Nancy
A jewel of 18th-century classical art, Place Stanislas is an urban ensemble of rare harmony, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
Getting there
By train: Nancy-Ville station (TGV), around ten minutes' walk away. The centre is pedestrianised and the square is easy to reach from the station.
History
It was commissioned by Stanisław Leszczyński (Stanislas), former King of Poland turned Duke of Lorraine, and built from 1751 to 1755 by the architect Emmanuel Héré. The gilded wrought-iron gates are the work of the ironsmith Jean Lamour.
Culture & stories
Together with Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance, the square forms a UNESCO-listed ensemble. In summer, a sound and light show is projected onto the façades.
