Centre Pompidou-Metz
The first decentralised branch of a major national cultural institution, the Centre Pompidou-Metz presents modern and contemporary art beneath a spectacular undulating timber roof inspired by a Chinese hat.
Getting there
By train: Metz-Ville station, a 5-minute walk away (the Centre is right behind the station). By car: car parks in the Amphithéâtre district.
History
Designed by the architects Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines, it opened in 2010. Its hexagonal glued-laminated timber framework covers a vast area and peaks at 77 m (a nod to 1977, when the Centre Pompidou in Paris opened).
Culture & stories
The museum stages major temporary exhibitions drawing on the national collection of modern art, one of the richest in the world.
