Château du Haut-Barr

Nicknamed “the Eye of Alsace”, the Château du Haut-Barr crowns three pink sandstone rocks above Saverne, with vast views over the plain and the Vosges.

Getting there

By car from Saverne (about 10 min via a forest road, on-site parking). By train: Saverne station, then taxi or on foot (steep climb).

History

Built around 1100 by the Bishops of Strasbourg to keep watch over the Zorn valley, it was remodelled in the Renaissance and then dismantled from the 17th century onwards.

Culture & stories

You cross a small bridge linking the rocks before climbing to the top for the panorama. Part of the site houses a restaurant.
