Bitche Citadel

Towering over the town from its pink sandstone spur, the Citadel of Bitche is an impregnable fortress remodelled by Vauban, guardian of the Bitche Gap.

Getting there

By car: Bitche, in the heart of the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park. Parking at the foot of the citadel.

History

Rebuilt by Vauban in the late 17th century, it withstood several sieges, notably in 1870–1871. An immersive audio-guided tour retraces its military history.

Culture & stories

Underground passages, casemates and views over the Northern Vosges; the town of Bitche has obtained the UNESCO label for its fort within the network of fortifications.
