Mont Sainte-Odile

Perched at more than 760 metres on a spur of the Vosges, Mont Sainte-Odile is the most important place of pilgrimage in Alsace, dedicated to Saint Odile, the region's patron saint. The terrace offers a striking panorama over the plain.

Getting there

By car from Obernai or Ottrott (about 15 min, car parks at the summit). On foot via numerous trails, including the circuit of the Mur Païen. Obernai is the nearest station, then taxi or car.

History

A monastery was founded here around 690 by Odile, daughter of Duke Etichon. Destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries, the present convent dates mainly from the 17th century. The site is encircled by the enigmatic Mur Païen (Pagan Wall), a megalithic enclosure several kilometres long.

Culture & stories

Chapels, the panoramic terrace and Saint Odile's springs punctuate the visit. Still an active place of contemplation, it welcomes pilgrims and hikers alike.
