Verdun

On the banks of the Meuse, Verdun is known worldwide for the Battle of 1916, but the town also charms visitors with its historic centre, fortified gates and riverside quays.

By train: Verdun station (TER regional trains). By car: A4, Voie Sacrée exit.

History

A bishopric and stronghold since Antiquity, it was here in 843 that the Treaty of Verdun was signed, dividing Charlemagne's empire. Vauban turned it into a mighty fortress.

Culture & stories

The Porte Chaussée, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace (World Peace Centre) and the Victory Monument punctuate the visit.
