Langres
Perched on a spur above the Marne, Langres is one of the few towns in France still entirely encircled by ramparts, which stretch for more than 3.5 km and are punctuated by towers and gates.
Getting there
By train: Langres-Marne station. By car: A31, Langres exit.
History
A former Gallo-Roman city (Andematunnum) and bishopric, it is the birthplace of the philosopher Denis Diderot, born in 1713. Its Saint-Mammès Cathedral blends Romanesque and Gothic styles.
Culture & stories
A panoramic rampart walk, Renaissance houses, museums and a festival celebrating Diderot bring the town to life.
