Saint-Dié-des-Vosges

Saint-Dié-des-Vosges is nicknamed the “godmother of America”: it was here, in 1507, that the name “America” was printed for the very first time.

Getting there

By train: Saint-Dié-des-Vosges station, in the Meurthe valley.

History

Largely destroyed in 1944, the town was rebuilt. Its cathedral, Gothic cloister and the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame-de-Galilée bear witness to its past.

Culture & stories

The Tour de la Liberté (Liberty Tower), a media library housed in the Le Corbusier factory and the International Geography Festival bring the town to life.
