La Petite France, Strasbourg
Once the quarter of tanners, fishermen and millers, La Petite France lines the canals of the Ill with its 16th- and 17th-century half-timbered houses, in the heart of Strasbourg's UNESCO-listed Grande-Île.
Getting there
By train: Strasbourg station, around ten minutes' walk away. By tram: Alt Winmärik or Faubourg National stops. An entirely pedestrianised quarter, best explored on foot or by sightseeing boat.
History
The name is thought to come from a hospice opened in the 15th century. The tall timber-framed houses, with steep roofs and open lofts, were once used to dry the tanners' hides.
Culture & stories
The Ponts Couverts and the panoramic terrace of the Barrage Vauban offer the best views of the quarter, one of the most photographed in Alsace and magical under the Christmas lights.
