Fort de la Pompelle
On the heights south-east of Reims, Fort de la Pompelle was a key bulwark in the city's defence during the First World War. Today it houses a museum.
Getting there
By car: Châlons road (RD 944), at Puisieulx, about 10 min from Reims. On-site parking.
History
Built in 1880–1883 as part of the Séré de Rivières system of fortifications, it was at the heart of the fighting in 1914–1918 and never fell into enemy hands.
Culture & stories
The museum displays a rich collection of Great War objects, including a unique set of German military headgear.
