Reims Tour, City of Coronations

Notre-Dame Cathedral, where the kings of France were crowned, the Basilica of Saint-Remi and the Art Deco centre of the Champagne city.

Overview

A visit to Reims almost always starts with Reims Cathedral (Notre-Dame), a 13th-century Gothic masterpiece. Since 1991 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the former Abbey of Saint-Remi and the Palais du Tau. Take time to study the west front: its smiling statues and the Coronation of the Virgin above the central portal are among the most famous sculptures in Gothic art. Inside, medieval stained glass sits alongside modern work, including windows by Marc Chagall. A guided tour of the towers takes you up to the roof timbers and the Gallery of Kings, with an open view over the city.

The history of the monarchy can be read in several places around the city. The Basilica of Saint-Remi houses the tomb of the bishop who baptised Clovis, and coronation ceremonies began and ended at the abbey. The Palais du Tau, where the king stayed, is currently closed for major renovation. The destruction of the First World War also left its mark: the centre was largely rebuilt in the 1920s, and Art Deco façades reveal themselves as you wander the streets or on a themed guided walk run by the tourist office.
