Fort Douaumont
The linchpin of Verdun's ring of forts, Fort Douaumont saw some of the fiercest fighting of 1916. Taken by surprise on 25 February 1916, it was not recaptured until October.

History
Built from 1885 onwards, buried and reinforced with concrete, it symbolises what was at stake in the battle. Its shell-churned upper works can still be visited.
