Fort Vaux
Fort Vaux passed into legend in June 1916: under siege, its garrison led by Commandant Raynal held out until the water ran out before surrendering.

By car from Verdun via the D913 then the D913a (~10 km).
History
Retaken in November 1916, it still bears the scars of the assaults. Commandant Raynal's last carrier pigeon is commemorated here.

Tour the tunnels and the shell-torn roof; one of the key sites of the battlefield.
