Spa Town of Plombières-les-Bains
A spa town beloved of Napoleon III: Second Empire and Belle Époque heritage to explore on foot (spa facilities currently closed).
Overview
Tucked into a narrow valley in the southern Vosges, Plombières-les-Bains owes its character to its hot springs, known since antiquity, and to the interest shown in it by both Napoleonic Empires. Several members of the Bonaparte family, including Joséphine and Hortense, stayed there for long periods. Napoleon III then revived the spa from 1856: in 1857 he laid the foundation stone of the Thermes Napoléon and had the Parc Tivoli laid out. It was also in Plombières that he received Cavour on 21 July 1858, for a decisive meeting in the process of Italian unification.
Today, a visit is mainly about heritage. The thermal baths and the Calodaé spa, built above Roman-era galleries, are closed, and no reopening has been announced so far. You can, however, explore the town by following the urban walk offered on site, spot the old baths and spa pavilions, admire the Second Empire architecture of the Thermes Napoléon – a listed historic monument – from the outside, then continue your stroll in the park. It's an interesting stop for history lovers and combines well with a hike in the surrounding forests.

No, not as far as we know. Both the Thermes Napoléon and the Calodaé spa have been closed since their operator went into compulsory liquidation, and no reopening date has been given. If you're coming for the thermal waters, check with the town hall or the tourist office first.
What is there to see in Plombières-les-Bains?
The spa heritage is best discovered on foot: the façade of the Thermes Napoléon, the Roman Bath, old baths and pavilions such as the Bain Stanislas, the Parc Tivoli laid out at the request of Napoleon III, and the neo-Gothic church built under the Second Empire. An urban walking trail helps you find your way around.
How do you get to Plombières-les-Bains?
By car, the town is about 32 km south of Épinal, via the N57 then the D34. By public transport, the nearest SNCF railway station is Remiremont, from where buses serve Plombières. Check timetables before you travel, as services are limited.
What is the link between Plombières and Napoleon III?
Napoleon III made several spa stays in Plombières and revived the resort by setting up an operating company and building new facilities. In July 1858 he received Cavour there for the so-called Plombières meeting, which played a key role in the unification of Italy.
