Fort de Schoenenbourg – Maginot Line
One of the main Maginot Line forts open to visitors: nearly 3 km of galleries up to 30 m underground.
Overview
In the middle of the fields between Hunspach and Ingolsheim, only a few concrete blocks poke out of the ground. Most of the Fort de Schoenenbourg lies underground: nearly 3 kilometres of tunnels dug some thirty metres deep, built between 1931 and 1935 as an artillery fort on the Maginot Line. The visit takes you through this small underground town, with its barracks, kitchens, command post, power station and combat blocks fitted with retractable turrets.
The fort is remarkably well preserved. Since the 1980s, a team of dedicated volunteers has been restoring the installations, and you discover a complete fortification with its original equipment. Its history is unusual too: described as the most heavily bombarded fort on the Maginot Line, it was never taken and only surrendered on the orders of the high command. You explore freely, at your own pace, with information sheets; groups can book a guided tour. Wear good shoes and bring a jacket: there's a lot of walking, and the air stays cool underground.
