Ribeauvillé
A town of art at the foot of three castles, capital of the minstrels and home of the Pfifferdaj festival.
Overview
Ribeauvillé stretches out where the Strengbach valley opens onto the plain, backed by hills crowned with the ruins of three castles that belonged to the lords of Ribeaupierre: Saint-Ulrich, Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre. Below, the Grand’Rue links the lower town to the upper town. Along it you’ll pass half-timbered houses, shops selling Alsatian specialities and the Butchers’ Tower (Tour des Bouchers), a former fortified gate that marked the boundary between two districts of the town and has become its emblem.
The town also keeps alive the memory of the minstrels of Alsace. In the Middle Ages, this brotherhood of travelling musicians placed itself under the protection of the Ribeaupierre family, and the house known as the Pfifferhus, on the Grand’Rue, recalls this history. Every first Sunday in September, the Pfifferdaj, or “Day of the Pipers”, brings a great historical procession in costume through the streets. In December, a medieval Christmas Market sets up in the town. Outside these two events, Ribeauvillé can be explored peacefully on foot, among the cellars of winegrowers from the Kirchberg, Osterberg and Geisberg vineyards. You can also extend your walk with a climb up to the castles, where the view opens out over the Alsace plain.
Where to do it
In Ribeauvillé (Haut-Rhin (68)), in Alsace. Best season: 🗓️ All year round.
Good to know
In the Middle Ages, the brotherhood of the minstrels of Alsace placed itself under the protection of the lords of Ribeaupierre. The Pfifferdaj, the festival that keeps this memory alive, is said to be the oldest medieval festival in Alsace.
Tips
To climb up to the three castles, wear good shoes and allow half a day: the ruins can only be reached on foot, by sometimes steep paths. On Pfifferdaj day and during the Christmas Market the town is very busy, so arrive early or use the park-and-ride shuttle when it is running.

Frequently asked questions
When is the Pfifferdaj, the minstrels’ festival in Ribeauvillé?
It traditionally takes place on the first Sunday in September. In 2026, it was held on 6 September. The highlight is the historical procession on Sunday afternoon, with more than a thousand people in costume. A medieval market, street shows and a torchlight procession on Saturday evening complete the programme.
Can you visit the three castles of Ribeauvillé?
Yes, but only on foot. A hiking loop sets off from the town and links Saint-Ulrich, the largest and best preserved, with Girsberg and Haut-Ribeaupierre. The paths are fairly demanding: allow a few hours including breaks, and bring water and suitable footwear.
When is the medieval Christmas Market in Ribeauvillé?
It is held in December, over several weekends. For 2026, the announced dates are 5, 6, 12 and 13 December. Stalls line the Grand’Rue, and jugglers, dancers and musicians in costume liven up the streets. Confirm the programme with the tourist office before you come.
Do you have to pay to visit Ribeauvillé?
No, you can explore the town freely all year round. Only certain events or activities may charge admission: check with the Pays de Ribeauvillé et Riquewihr tourist office for this year’s arrangements.
Information checked in October 2026. Opening hours, prices and conditions may change: check the official website before you travel.
